I wanted to document my process better this time. Here is the initial sketch and then the color blocking. I switch back to the sketch to keep values in mind as I layer on the colors. For the color blocking stage I have been mixing colors and directly blocking them in without first placing in a base color. I found it to be way more efficient that way. I then focus the highlights and soften the features. I left the hair for last on a separate layer to play around with strands and textures.

Yet another one of these speed portraits. This time of Samira Wiley of Orange is the New Black fame. I was watching the new season earlier and I just think Samira has such a great face I wanted to paint her. I'm really loving putting these together. Its a great quick little exercise to do when you want to paint and have no idea what to create. This one took about an hour from start to finish.
I started off with the idea of just doing a fairly simple business fashion illustration then decided to play around with type and format it in the style of a mock magazine article. Tried my hand at making my own header type. I liked how that turned out but I'm not convinced on the main type itself. Might play with some background colors to boost brightness and contrast also later on. I have included a version without type and a detail shot of the illustration;

If you have been a loyal blog follower then you know I make one of these at least once a year. Mostly just to keep things updated and to see how my progress is going. Every artist I know, no matter how experienced is always striving to constantly change and improve. I hope to continue doing so myself.

I don't want viewers to get too distracted by the reference photo but I'll provide it for the sake of showing where I got my practice painting from;

Yet another study/speed painting. This time I wanted to practice painting water. This was pretty challenging and I am still not 100% happy with it but it was good practice. Definitely have to continue these studies, they have been really helping me get back into the painting groove.

So several things inspired this speed painting exercise (though it seems I'm getting rusty since this took over instead of under an hour). First up is I haven't updated this thing in ages. Second I watched Eva Green in Kingdom of Heaven recently and fell in love with her color schemes and costumes. Thirdly, I saw Loish post a similar color exercise here; http://blog.loish.net/post/84322203508/steps-including-ref-image-at-the-beginning-for
So I decided to get back into painting since all I've been doing this past here is freelance graphic design stuff that I can't put into an illustration portfolio. Really hoping to post more of these exercises as time goes on just to get back into it.
I was not trying to get it to look exactly like the photo, simply to practice color and trying to make the image my own. Here is my original sketch before painting;
For reference here is the photo I used as inspiration;
